Most vaccines used for travellers are very well tolerated. On a practical basis, we rarely see any side effects. During your appointment for your consultation, you’ll receive all the relevant information on the possible side effects of the various vaccines.

It’s never too late to be vaccinated. Although you may not be fully immunized, your body will develop some immunity to protect you from infections. If need be, the appropriate vaccines, advice and medication prescriptions may even be given on the eve of your departure and can have a significant impact on preventing health problems abroad.

Since complete vaccination and immunization may require more than one visit, ideally you should consult us six to eight weeks prior to your departure. This allows your body plenty of time to develop the antibodies necessary to fight the infections.

If you are making a lengthy or complicated trip, or If you have a chronic disease you may want to book your appointment well in advance of your trip. 

When you are traveling you may catch a disease by consuming contaminated water or food, but contacts with animals, by insect bites, but contacts with contaminated soil within open wound or by person-to-person.

Medicare does not cover the cost of travel medicine consultations nor does it cover vaccines in general except for some such as tetanus boosters for example.

For your appointment, you have to take into consideration the price of the consultation as well as the price of the vaccines. We cannot give you a definitive price since it may vary according to the type and the number of vaccines that you may require. In general, the cost of an appointment for a consultation in travel medicine and vaccines can vary from $65-$450, on average.

The pre-travel consultation is a very important part of the process. This is when our specialists take into consideration a series of parameters before advising you with the appropriate vaccines such as, for example, your itinerary, your health, your allergies, your medication, your immunization status etc. it is also during the pre-travel consultation that you will receive all the appropriate advice as well as prescriptions necessary for you to stay in good health during your trip.

You cannot bypass the pre-travel consultation unless you have a prescription from a physician for a specific vaccine. In that case, you will receive the appropriate vaccine if there are no contraindications but you will not benefit from all the information and advice that you could get your pre-travel consultation.

You should bring your itinerary of your trip and all the destinations and stops that you have planned. You should also bring your immunization booklet or any immunization records that you may have and a list of current medications. If you do not have any immunization booklet, will provide you with a new one.

Our personalized consultations typically last about 45 minutes and include a comprehensive review of your itinerary and specific topics about your travels. Our Travel Medicine Specialists will discuss health recommendations and requirements. Our consultation rooms are private and comfortable. You can usually schedule an appointment on short notice and should you travel with your spouse or children, we can accommodate the entire family in one appointment setting.

The duration of the protection from the vaccines varies depending upon the type of vaccine. Some vaccines last a lifetime while others last 10 years and some only last 3 months. During your pre-travel consultation, we will assess your needs and advise you with respect to the appropriate vaccines that you may need.

Some health problems may arise on the ship itself, while others may occur on your excursions. The vaccines that you may require depend on where the ship stops. It’s therefore essential that you consult the travel health clinic.

Even if it’s true that, as a child, you were exposed to infectious diseases to which you may have developed a certain immunity, if you’ve been in Canada for several years, this immunity may have substantially decreased, based on the disease. Even though you may have lived overseas in the past, you may no longer be immune to many diseases such as malaria and traveller’s diarrhea. 

In addition, staying with your family in a foreign country may present certain greater risks than staying in a hotel.

It’s therefore strongly recommended that you go for a consultation when you’re planning this type of trip.

Traveller’s diarrhea is a very frequent problem that can ruin your vacation. There are several ways to minimize the risks.

During your consultation at our clinic, we’ll give you all the relevant prevention tips and, when necessary, a prescription for medication to treat diarrhea. An oral vaccine against traveller’s diarrhea is also available.

Pregnancy itself is a condition that predisposes women to certain greater health problems in foreign countries. There are some travel vaccines and medications that are indicated for pregnant women. However, some are contraindicated for pregnant women. It’s therefore important to take the necessary measures to protect yourself and consult our travel health clinic in order to assess the situation.

Breast feeding, like pregnancy, requires special attention. Your destination, the length of your trip and the age of your child are but some of the elements that must be evaluated before we make recommendations concerning vaccination or preventive medication.

It is recommended that all family members receive the necessary protection upon traveling. Your children will also be exposed to the health risks associated with travel. Children, even very young ones, can be protected by vaccination just as adults are. After evaluating them we will let you know which vaccines are appropriate for them. We can accommodate you as a family in one appointment setting when you come to see us for your consultation and administration of your vaccines.

Malaria is potentially a fatal disease that is transmitted through insects’ bites. Malaria may also cause serious health problems that can linger. Currently, there’s no vaccine available to prevent malaria. However, effective medication can help to prevent this disease and, for most travellers, this medication is well tolerated. It’s important to visit us as early as possible before your departure, since you must start taking this medication before your stay in a malarial area.

During your consultation at our clinic, you’ll be given important advice on how to avoid insect bites.

Generally speaking, the administration of most vaccines isn’t contraindicated when you’re on antibiotics.

If you are currently having a benign infection with no fever, such as a cold, or even mild diarrhea, you can still be vaccinated if you are in good health.

Flu season is all year round in the tropics, and from May to October in the southern hemisphere. For many reasons it may be a good idea to think about receiving a flu shot prior to travel.

For the most popular sun destinations, such as Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, etc., an update of your basic vaccination (e.g. tetanus), as well as specific vaccines for your trip (e.g. hepatitis A and B), will be recommended.

Some vaccines are recommended in order to protect your own health (e.g. hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid fever, tetanus, etc.).
