Prostate Biopsy

The ultrasound examination of the prostate is one of the best medical exams to study the prostate.

An ultrasound-guided biopsy of the prostate may be recommended if the result of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test is abnormal or if the doctor finds a suspicious lesion. This exam, performed onsite at Physimed, consists of taking several small samples of tissue (biopsy) during a transrectal ultrasound of the prostate to be analyzed microscopically in pathology.

The needle is directed in the prostate under ultrasound guidance.

The pathological examination of tissues can establish the presence or absence of cancer cells.

During this procedure, the discomfort is minimal because the rectal wall is relatively insensitive in the prostate area and the examination is performed under local anaesthesia. The examination is performed by a urologist and takes about 30 minutes.

Prior to this examination, a rectal enema and antibiotic treatment are recommended to reduce the risk of infection. It is important to notify the doctor about the medicines you take, as some treatments may increase the risk of bleeding.
