Digital Mammography

Digital mammography is a medical imaging technique which uses X-rays to provide an image of the internal structure of the breast.

Mammograms are used to detect abnormal growths and changes in the breast tissue in women who have no signs or symptoms or in women who have signs or symptoms that need to be investigated, such a lump, pain or nipple discharge.

Indications of mammography:

During mammography each breast is positioned on a platform and gradually compressed with a paddle. The compression allows for a better visualization of the breast tissue and the use of lower radiation dose and increases sharpness of the images.

For various reasons (technical and/or diagnostic), it is possible that the radiologist may require you to return for additional images and/or alternate positions.

A bilateral mammogram takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. If you have breast implants, the exam may take longer, up to 40 minutes.

Physimed’s Medical Imaging Center is equipped with a GE Senographe Essential which offers the advantage of the latest digital technology and provides the highest image quality at a low radiation dose.

Please note that the fees for mammography exams are covered by the RAMQ.
